APPRAISAL: 1989 Outrage 22

I'm getting ready to sell my 1989 Outrage 22' with a 1999 Yamaha 225 and 2002 Float-On trailer. Please give me an appraisal so I can formulate an asking price.

The boat, engine, and trailer are all maintained in very good condition

Teak and fiberglass all in good shape.

The boat has been trailered and covered in Florida all its life.

The boat has been use maybe ten times a year since 2000 and started-monthly.

I don't know the market for used Boston Whaler boats at this moment, but I can offer some comments on the boat.

A 1989 OUTRAGE 22 is from the production epoch where the liner mold was changed to create a full-width engine splash well. This is a very attractive feature and an improvement over the earlier production models with the small sink-style engine splash well. In terms of other OUTRAGE 22 hulls on the market, it will be one of the newest ones available.

The weather canvas system is a very nice enhancement to the open boat OUTRAGE style, and as you note permits overnighting in the bow area. This is also a very attractive feature.

The FLOAT-ON aluminum trailer from c.2002 is also an important element in the package. Assuming the trailer is completely roadworthy, with good running gear, it adds considerable value to the boat-engine-trailer package.

Regarding the 1999 Yamaha 225-HP engine, I am assuming it is a two-stroke-power-cycle engine. If so, please give more details about the engine. Is it a Saltwater Series engine? Is it an Ox-66 series engine. These older two-stroke-power-cycle engines from Yamaha are from the "golden age" of the two-stroke-outboard engine, that is, they are well designed, well-made, and very good engines. Of course, in 2024 the engine will be 25-years-old and apparently has been used in saltwater--please correct me if my assumption is wrong. The engine age and history of use will limit the value, but on the other hand, if the engine runs beautifully, it can be an attractive part of the deal by not adding the enormous cost of a new engine to the package.

You have an extensive list of accessories on the boat. Whether all of them will be attractive to every buyer is hard to say. But for a buyer who finds them all useful and desirable, they will add significant value.

The final consideration is the comparison of your asking price to the cost of a used Boston Whaler 22-foot OUTRAGE. Here I don't have an exact figure, but I see ten-year-old 220 OUTRAGE boats offered for sale at $75,000 to $90,000. On that basis, I would expect that an asking price for your 34-year-old OUTRAGE 22 would in the range of $30,000 to $37,500.

As always, your desire to sell quickly will affect the price you need to get at sale. If you can wait for the right buyer--someone who wants to buy one of the last classic OUTRAGE 22 hulls made, who appreciates all the add-ons, and understands the bargain of getting a high-quality older two-stroke engine, you should be able to get the higher figure.

I will incorporate your ideas into my post.

The canvas was custom made of Sunbrella fabric and stainless by a fantastic canvas guy.
The dodger area has two large cushions that span the width of the hull to make a large bed. The entire bed is easily removable, but I leave the front cushion in place for a comfortable lounging area.

The trailer (and the boat) are all in perfect working condition. The trailer was custom made at Float-On for the boat. It has a folding tongue. The axles were replaced in 2017 with premium axles, tires, and rims. The distance from my house to the ramp is 3 miles.

The engine is the last year Yamaha made a 2 cycle 225hp; I bought it because of that. It is a Saltwater Series Ox-66. It starts and runs perfectly. The engine has extremely low hours on it. Being Miami, its use has been in saltwater. The engine is carefully flushed and rinsed after each use and started monthly on freshwater flush when not in use. There is minimal corrosion on the engine and it is periodically misted with WD40 under the cowling. The boat has never been kept in the water and it has always been covered. Summer is my high-use time, this year I went out no more than 5 times to my usual spot 45 minutes each way - So 10 hours for the summer, less the rest of the year. I used to take the boat out more frequently, but it has seen little use since I bought my house in 2000 and started renovations.

The hull is in excellent condition, no soft spots and no significant dings. The rub rail was replaced with the original OEM Whaler rub rail last year. Teak has been oiled recently and is beautiful.

I really don't want to sell it, but it is time.
We are moving in the near future, my tow car(crown vic) is showing its age and we just don't use our beloved boat much any more.
The sale would go a long way towards a new car.

WIth the limited photos, I would value the boat significantly less than Jim.

The engine, while serviceable and usable to some, is worth nothing to buyers as they will want to repower ($25K +).

I think $18-20K as is.

A bit more if the buyer from California or the gelcoat has a mirror finish and/or the fuel tank replaced.

Thanks Phil, two good estimates -
The engine runs great. But I would not trust an old engine further offshore than Towboat services. I've only needed a tow twice in 23 years, both more than 10 years ago. Once when I ran out of gas and once when the external oil tank sensor failed and set off an erroneous alarm. This Yamaha has been incredibly good. I sold the Johnson 225 that the boat came with after 10 years because it started having multiple minor problems.
The fuel tank is one of the lucky ones that has the zinc chromate green primer anti-corrosive finish.
I will have the interior/exterior polished to a gloss. And post detailed photos before listing it.

The boat is a good fit for someone who wants to use it as is knowing that at some point a repower and new fuel tank will be needed.
If I could not get more than hull value, I'd keep the boat and tow car until one of them dies or I sell the house.

My appraisal may be too high, particularly for a Florida saltwater boat, but my comparison to a used 190 MONTAUK shows what the used Boston Whaler boat market is like.

I think of the 190 MONTAUK as a slightly smaller and modern version of an OUTRAGE 22, and seeing a used one sell for $68,000 is quite a good benchmark for what people are willing to pay for an open boat of that size these days.

My appraisal assumes the hull is in excellent condition, and needs really no work. I also assume the Yamaha engine is in excellent condition. And the same for the trailer. Many buyers do NOT want to buy a project boat.

I look at the older engine like this: if it still runs perfectly at this age, why wouldn’t you expect it to run a few more years?

The biggest drawback will be the higher fuel used per hour or per mile. If a buyer plans to run the boat 200-hours each year, then better fuel economy might be worth a re-power. But if the buyer is only going to use the boat sporadically, the cost of the extra fuel consumed by the older engine will be only a small fraction of the cost of buying a new 200-HP-class engine.

Figure 6 shows console teak is not in "good shape."

The Yamaha engine is revealed in Figure 6 to be a Saltwater Series model, and the cowling paint and decals look very good.

That is a custom-made aluminum box that houses the oil reservoir and starting battery, protecting them from any amount of water coming over the stern. It serves as a step and a seat, hence the anti-slip strips.
