I plan to refinish the mahogany wood on my 1980 SPORT 13 used in the seats, console, and other wood parts. The previous owner refinished the wood using polyurethane. I can easily remove the existing finish down to the wood with a Sandvik scraper and orbital sander. But the deeper grooves of the grain are black, from what looks like mold; the existing finish is now not completely waterproof.
Q1: how can I rid the deeper grooves of wood of black mold?
Q2: can wood bleach (oxalic acid) followed by some type of neutralizer [be used to rid wood of black mold in the grooves] without discoloring the natural brown tone of the wood?
Discussions on the forum recommend using an initial coat of epoxy (MAS or West 105 w/ 207 resin), followed by multiple coats of UV-resistant polyurethane varnish (Awlgrip or Epifanes). I can do all that.
Give me recommendations on specific product numbers for varnish and epoxy.
In order to save the expense of using epoxy I may only keep the boat for a couple more years, on the basis that I will need at least a gallon of epoxy to refinish all the wood on the whole boat and a gallon of epoxy cost more than $200.
