I'd like to increase the fuel capacity of my 1982 Sport17 and am considering a Moeller 15-gallon tank that would mount permanently under the bench seat aft of the helm. Most of the photos I've seen of this model with increased tank capacity show that owners have chosen two 6-gallon tanks instead of one larger tank. Is there a reason to avoid the larger tank, or an advantage to having two smaller tanks, other than portability?

My speculation about the preference for two 6-gallon on-deck fuel tanks instead of one larger capacity tank is to have two advantages:

--you can still lift a nearly-full 6-gallon portable tank out of the trunk of your car after you have filled it at a highway fuel station; this saves the trouble and expense of buying fuel on the water or trying to add fuel to a larger boat tank from smaller dispensing tanks;

--in the days of pre-mixing oil into the gasoline at a 1:50 ratio, it was very simple to buy oil in pint containers (16-ounces), add the whole pint to an almost empty 6-gallon tank, and fill with gasoline. That gave a ratio of 16:(128 x 6) or 1:48.
