Fiberglass Repair Advice Needed

I am a do it yourselfer and working on a project. I have never worked with fiberglass, gelcoat, or anything in that area but I am about to tackle a project and need help. I have a fiberglass trike body that needs a few drilled holes patched and needs to be painted. The original gelcoat was painted over. I have removed the paint and have the original gelcoat (with tons of flake) exposed. It is pitted real bad. What is the best way to patch the holes (1/4" and smaller)? And I was thinking of using a polyester resin or a gelcoat to prime and fill the pitting. Then spray automotive paint. How should I tackle this? Please let me know if this plan will work or suggest the best route.
