DAUNTLESS 16 Corroded Fuel Tank Vent

Postby Tg196 » Tue Aug 09, 2016 8:18 pm

Has anyone replaced the fuel tank vent on the port side of the freeboard on a Dauntless 16?

[The fuel tank vent] has heavy corrosion. I'm just afraid to play around with it in case it snaps off.

Any idea if there's threads inside?

Thanks in advance.

The vent is almost certainly held in place by a backing nut. If I recall correctly it's a difficult reach under the deck to the vent but you'll want to remove the vent hose from the vent before removing the nut. I would replace the old vent, nut and with hose clamp new high quality stainless steel parts.

Take the opportunity to determine if the hose should be replaced while doing the job. If it needs replacement use the old hose as a pull string for the new. Ensure there are no tight bends nor kinks in the hose. I believe it is recommended to ensure the hose is routed or supported so a loop is formed at a point higher than the vent to prevent water entering the fuel tank through the vent.

Phil,

I believe that vent is chrome plated. Do you know what the base metal is? I believe my old Dauntless 16 which had the vent added as a Boston Whaler modification after the sale had a brass chrome plated vent. The work was done in 1999 so I may well be mistaken.

Butch -

You are correct. I knew someone might spot that so I posted the photo just to illustrate it is a threaded tube to assist TG in removing it.

I could not open the electronic Perko catalog to show a close-to-OEM fitting.
