Repainting Entire Boat 13' 1972

Postby Robertl211 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 12:22 am

Looking for any insight from someone who has already taken on this project:

The paint is relatively expensive, and figuring I'll never paint anything else in Boston Whaler Blue (or at least not in the lifespan of a can of paint on the shelf) how much did you actually use on the inner hull? I see some places a quart will be enough, and others it takes upwards of a gallon?! Going to be using TotalBoat Wet Edge in BW blue. Not looking for a showroom floor finish, but want decent results. Will be doing 2 coats over primer. Using TotalBoat high build primer as well.

Same for the hull. Priming and painting white. I am already going to get a gallon of the high build primer, that should be enough. Will a gallon of white topcoat be enough for 2 coats?

Will also be using the TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound. These products have great reviews so far and are much cheaper than the (most likely better quality) well known competitors.

I'm also restoring a 27 FC and guessing on the paint qty. By the way, the total boat products are great. I've had nothing but good results with them. Watch the weather when you paint. You need low humidity and medium temperatures.

I recently completed my project which was a 1983 Boston Whaler 13' that needed alot of TLC. Luckily I was able to do minor gel coat repairs, one fiberglass repair, sand and polish the outside of the hull so no painting was necessary. The inside I decided to use TotalBoat product and basically followed the same process Jamestown distributors posted (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tZDBOYqdfA) to refinish the inside of the boat. Rather than post a bunch of pictures it was easier to put together a slideshow of my project, you can find it here:

Feel free to reach out if you want to see some more pictures of my project as I can imagine it will look very similar to yours at some stages.

My 13' just took about a gallon of high build primer to coat the hull. Two quarts of mixed primer covered just over 50% of the hull. Image
