I am soon going to pick up a [2011] Montauk 170 that has the typical aft step and seating locations flanking the engine with the live well option in-between. We have a daughter that loves to sit in the stern and we're also considering space in the stern for anyone else that may join her. I don't think just adding a cushion and not having a backrest would be very comfortable over time.

We're not fishermen; is the live well removable?

Can the live well could be taken out and maybe some type of aftermarket bench with storage below or a folding bench be installed?

Anyone done something similar?

Anyone have a neat idea?

The livewell has plumbing and pump. The pick-up for the intake for the livewell is below the waterline. If you take out the livewell the below the waterline fitting and hole would have to be filled and repaired. I believe you can order and install the optional 170 Montauk's rear port and starboard seat option. The optional rear seats have a price around $1,400.

It sounds like the best remedy for removal of the live well is to not buy a used boat that has the live well option.

The Montauk 170 has had several rear seating options since it's introduction in 2002.

The original option was a quarter seat cushion. A backrest was later offered.

Several years later a add on seat attached to the step was offered.

The current option includes seats that attach forward of the rear step.
