Hi all--I am new to this forum and already have a 305 CONQUEST. I am considering a 14- or 15-foot Boston Whaler boat to restore for small water crabbing. I will appreciate some advice.

There is a 1974 14-foot hull available in good shape, but, of course, the helm consists of a single teak plank with a steering wheel. I have seen helm consoles for sale as parts and would be willing to work to modify and put the helm in if it could fit and seal well.

From your experience: is it folly to try such modifications?

Has anyone done this successfully?

I will appreciate seeing pictures or sharing from your experience: what was the most important part of such restoration and modifications?

I don't think there is a Boston Whaler boat c.1974 that generally referred to as a 14-footer. You must be talking about either a 13-footer or a 15-footer.

If the boat you are considering is a SPORT model, the helm console is quite simple. It would not be particularly hard to duplicate the original helm console-- or to improve on it.

Thanks that's helpful. It in fact is a 13'3" hull when he actually measured it. Sounds like the ones with the teak plank as a helm may not be the easiest.

There is an old 15 which has a rare helm already, but unfortunately the gelcoat is completely worn away in all the wrong places and the guy wants antique grade dollars--so I will keep looking.

If anyone knows of a center console 15 whaler let me know. The new ones are easier to find but what's the fun in that?

Lisa--building a new side console for a 13 Sport is a relatively easy project. Solid mahogany was used for many of the old consoles but it could be made from any type lumber you may prefer and would serve as well.

Drawings with dimensions are available. If you otherwise like the boat I recommend building the console. A new console can be purchased on line if you feel the project is more bother than it's worth.

I rebuilt my Helm, used Mahogany after making patterns out of MDF, bought a damaged sheet at Home Depot for $3.

Great deal on all that fine mahogany for $3. You got a bargain.
