2000 18 VENTURA Scupper or Thru-hull Repair

[I am in the process of] pulling [out] a bait well on my 2000 Ventura 18 to repair a leaking scupper.

I found there was no nut on the inside of the transom. The hole was drilled close to the floor level in the area below the bait well.

I bought new scupper fittings to install, but but will have to trim off most of one side of the nut. I am not sure if it will fit [even if trimmed].

The transom hole seems like it should have been drilled 3/4-inch higher to accommodate the nut.

Has anyone seen [the through hull fitting for the deck drains] installed without a nut on the inside and just bedded with sealant?

Thanks for any help and input--bb

Take a look at this drawing: 2000 Ventura Deck Assembly. Is item #52 what you are working on?
http://bostonwhaler.com.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/180-Ventura-Deck-Assembly-2000.pdf

If so, it is part #52 on this list:
http://bostonwhaler.com.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/180-Ventura-Deck-Assembly-Parts-List-2000.pdf

If NOT, then review the Hull Assembly Diagram:
http://bostonwhaler.com.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/180-Ventura-Hull-Assembly-2000.pdf

and items 24,30 and 31 on the parts diagram.

I would think you should not have to trim any part to install and will proffer that you have an incompatible thru hull.

To get the right part, contact you local whaler dealer. For superior service every time, contact Sue Lodel, Parts Manager (and guru to all owners) at Beacon/Twin Cities Marine. http://www.beacontcm.com

Call Boston Whaler Customer Service for advice on replacement of a deck through-hull drain. This is becoming a frequently asked question.

Watch this Boston Whaler video posted on YOUTUBE. It is on-topic for you:

Note: the narrator mentions that "specialized tools are needed" to accomplish this procedure. The narrator also recommends the procedure be done by an authorized dealer to preserve the hull warranty. Since your 2000-year boat is no longer under warranty, that may not be appropriate for your work.

In-question was the location of the hole [in the transom]. It would appear that any thru-transom fitting would not accept the nut due to the hole location.

The item number was 31 on the parts list.

Clarifying, I am curious as to the location of the hole on other Ventura models.

To assume that the location of the through-hull drain hole was drilled wrong on your particular boat would be highly speculative. Again, you can contact Boston Whaler Customer Service for more advice on the location of the hole drilled in the transom of Boston Whaler boats like yours or on Boston Whaler boats different from yours. Boston Whaler will give you a straight answer.

In order for the cockpit drain to be effective, the lower lip of the inner opening of the drain has to be just at the deck level or barely above it. On my Boston Whaler there are two 3-inch-diameter tubes glassed into the hull that open right at the level of the deck for water to drain out. No nut retains them; they are bonded in place.

Robert--can you share a photo of the through hull hole that indicates its apparent incorrect location?

We may be able to compare it to other members who own the same model.

Almost looks like a press fit without the interior piece.

When it comes to replacing Boston Whaler parts, especially if they are not offered at the everyday marine store, I consult the guru, Sue Lodel, Parts Manager at Beacon/Twin Cities Marine.

I would email her the photo and also the links to the diagram and parts list.

Make sure you check the wood around the thru hull fittings for rot. Boston Whaler uses plastic thru hulls that can deteriorate over time, and they may not have used enough sealant to protect the wood

I was able to trim the nut and seal both sides to secure the replacement scupper. the wood was solid, not sure why there was not a nut securing it on the inside but it's all set now. thanks for the input.
