I recently acquired a 1985 Montauk and have been refurbishing it cosmetically. It is almost ready for a shakedown cruise this coming Sunday, October 28, 2018.

I understand about the sump compartment and that the [drain] can be plugged from the hole inside the sump exiting through the transom.

I noticed when outside the boat and looking at the drain opening under the engine at bottom of transom, there is no brass lining in the drain as there is in every boat I have ever owned. In other words, if I wanted to put a drain plus in from the outside, the hole is there but it has no metal lining, The core hole looks like it has glass and [looks to be] in great shape.

Is [omission of a brass lining in the transom drain] normal?

Or, has the brass drain liner come out and [a new brass liner] needs to be purchased and bedded in?

In c.1985 Boston Whaler was using a brass through-hull drain tube in all drains. A 1985 boat is now 33-years-old. You are not the original owner. The drain could have been modified by a previous owner to a new configuration. The observation that the drain wall appears to be made of a laminate and resin suggests that a modification has been made.

I am going to put in a [brass] drain tube.

Check the diameter of the drain hole itself. If someone has added fiberglass resin to the drain, its diameter will have changed. The present drain hole diameter may no longer be the same as the original drain, and an original brass tube drain might not fit easily into a smaller diameter hole.
