Yamaha Vmax SHO Upper Oil Seal Popping Out

Postby jimh » Fri Jul 05, 2019 12:01 am

A boater reported that his 2015 Yamaha 115-HP Vmax SHO four-stroke-power-cycle engine had suffered repeated problems with the upper oil seal popping out of place. In his original post--now deleted--he gave a length backstory about the occurrence of the seal popping out of place several times. A Yamaha mechanic was cited as having explained the cause of the seal being pushed out of place was likely due to abnormally high oil pressure caused by the engine oil level being higher than it should have been. The boater also noted that the production-year-2016 and newer engines now have a retainer to hold the seal in place. Embedded in the long narrative were these four questions:

Q1: could the 2016-and-newer Yamaha oil seal retainer be added to a 2015 engine?

Q2: has any other 2015-product-year or older Yamaha 115 Vmax SHO engine had this problem?

Q3: if a mechanic installs a new seal, will the new seal be a remedy to the problem of the seal popping out?

Q4: if a mechanic installs a new seal will the outcome be a bigger and more expensive problem?
