Transducer Mounting on a 13' Super Sport

I have a 1985 13' Super Sport and would like to find the best location on the transom to mount a Garmin transducer.
When I put it close to the center point on the starboard side, I was getting what I believe was prop wash and it would not read the depth unless I went under 18mph. When I moved it to the furthest point to the right of the chine on the starboard side, it seemed to raise out of the water as soon as I started to get on plane and stopped reading. Does anyone have experience with this small Whaler and could suggest the best place to locate the transducer? Also, does it make a difference which side of prop you locate the transducer?
Thanks
Paul
