1962 Whaler 13-footer "Corner Bracket"

Postby jamorr04 » Tue Mar 16, 2021 7:15 pm

I am restoring a 1962 13-footer. This hull has a component that I have not seen in any reference photos.

At both stern corners of the hull there are brackets installed, and there is evidence of cracking. The brackets seem to be reinforcing the corners. The bolts holding the brackets in place were also holding some of the wire rope and pulley steering components as well.

[Are the metal brackets] a repair?

The metal brackets fastened to the transom corners as seen above in Figure 1 do not appear to be an original component of the 1962 hull. The brackets were likely added at some point when the owner noticed the transom-hull joint was weakened.

Thanks for quick response.

As I get into the restoration maybe I can do some investigative work into the damage that may have influenced someone to add this bracket. For the time being, I'll assume the brackets are there for a good reason and will not remove them.
