First Gelcoat Experiment

Replacing the motor on my 88 13' Whaler. The older Honda had a non-standard bolt pattern so I have to fill and re-drill for the 40 HP Yamaha 2 stroke replacement. I followed user recommendations for filling the existing holes. First I over drilled them then filled with mahogany plugs using gorilla glue. Followed by epoxy filler and finally fairing compound.
Now time to paint....I do not need a perfect result but it would be nice to try and get it close. My choices are:
1. Purchase the small Spectrum gelcoat paste repair kit which is color matched to Whaler Desert Tan. Relatively small investment of $40 but I am worried about the coverage and how decent the results will be because I would need to squeegee the product on.
2. Purchase a quart of Spectrum color matched gelcoat and brush or spray it on. I am comfortable with spraying but the quart is $150. I wouldn't hesitate with this approach however the shelf life is only 6 months so its not like I will be able to keep the quart for future repairs.
3. Buy standard white gelcoat and color matching kit. Much less expensive than the Spectrum color matched products but I am not sure in my abilities to match the color. The tinting kits have charts and some guidance but it seems like a daunting task.
Any advice/experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks
