Destroyer Steering Wheel Dimensions: Five Questions

Postby Raaaaay » Wed May 19, 2021 9:50 am

Q1: What is the correct diameter and dish angle for a Destroyer-type steering wheel for a 1989 17 SSL?

Q2: Is a diameter of 15-1/2-inches correct for a 1989 17 SSL?

Q3: Between two dish angles, 10-degrees and 22-degrees, which is the correct dish angle for a 1989 17 SSL?

Q4: Was the center cap for a Destroyer-type steering wheel made of plastic or teak on a 1989 17 SSL?

Q5: What is the BEST SOURCE for a plastic or teak center cap for a Destroyer-type steering wheel for a 1989 17 SSL?

BACKSTORY: I just acquired a 1989 17 Super Sport Limited with an aftermarket steering wheel. I want to replace that steering wheel with a stainless steel Destroyer-type steering wheel. Go2marine.com sells a Schmitt wheel in various sizes and dish angles.

RAAAY--My winter project was rescuing a Sport 13. Among the pile of parts that came with it was a 15-1/2-inch stainless steel wheel. I bought a smaller 13" wheel for my project, and now the 15" wheel is hanging in the garage. If you are interested in this, text me at 503-341-4634.

It is in good condition. I don't know the dish angle. On on a flat surface, the top of the rim of the wheel is 4-1/2-inches high. It does not have the plastic center cap.

I am a motivated seller, meaning, I would love to see it go to another guy on this website working on his Whaler project, and I will never use it.

You have not specified the number of spokes for the Destroyer-type wheel.

From what I have read, a six-spoke wheel is correct for a 1989 17-foot Boston Whaler. I guess I would prefer [a six-spoke Destroyer wheel].

Where do you live? Did you find one yet? I have a five-spoke original.

Bob, thanks. The Destroyer steering wheel should help dress-up my SSL.
