2005 190 NANTUCKET Water Accumulates in Sump

Postby Waterfun » Mon May 24, 2021 6:34 am

I have a 2005 190 NANTUCKET boat.

In the 2020 season I noticed the [sump] area was filling with water everyday. [There would be] no rain for weeks, and [the sump area will] fill with water. At season 2020 end, I had a marina look into [the problem]. The marina [solution was to] replace the "scuppers."

On the morning of May 23, 2021 the 2005 190 NANTUCKET was in the water for the first time for the season, and no rain had fallen. I opened the access lid to the sump area: the sump area was filled to the top. It looks like [the sump] area holds about 25-gallons of water. The 2005 190 NANTUCKET boat sits at the dock overnight.

Q: Is [the filling of the sump area of a 2005 190 NANTUCKET with 25-gallons of water every day] normal?

I will welcome any advice.

Inspect the entire deck drain assembly.

On the starboard side deck drain there is a rubber hose that connects the through hull to the deck drain. The rubber hose tends to shrink with age and pull either the deck drain or through-hull fitting--both plastic--until one of them brakes.

If the 2005 190 NANTUCKET boat has a live well, then inspect the live well plumbing, both the intake, under the boat, and the evacuation, carried out the transom.

Water will accumulate into the sump area. Apparently you have the sump drain plugged. Check the owner's manual to see if the sump drain can be left open to the sea.

The water in a deep sump (whose overboard drain is oriented straight down to the hull bottom and then to the sea) will only rise to the level of the sea when the drain is left open. How high that will be depends of the static trim on the boat. If the boat sits with the static trim down by the stern, that is normal. For a deep sump area, the water level with its drain open may rise several inches.

As a general rule the overboard drains outlets on the transom should not be deeply immerse into the sea, as any immersion will allow water to drain into the boat and rise to the level of the sea.

The integrity of all hoses, clamps, and through-hull fittings should be carefully checked. Even a slow leak if allowed to persist for 24-hours will admit a large volume of water.

Pump out the boat. Dry the areas around each drain. Place a paper towel down next to each.

Let the boat sit for 2-3 hours, inspect to see which paper towel is wet.

Once you identify the culprit I would remove and reinstall every through hull drain with a new one that has the fine threaded locking rings. I would also coat the walls of each hole completely in marine sealant (not adhesive).

If you have any of the plastic threaded drain plugs with the gasket, I would replace them too.
