1994 OUTRAGE 19 repower

Postby Wyo123 » Tue Sep 07, 2021 12:37 pm

I recently bought a 1994 19 Outrage II with a Johnson 150-HP Ocean Runner engine. The boat struggles to reach plane.

What’s the maximum engine weight rating?

Recommend an engine for a re-power.

There is no transom maximum weight rating for this hull. Whaler did not stipulate them on many models of that era.

Fellow Outrage 19 II owners have installed every brand of 150-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine without concern for engine weight.

There are two major engine brands now: Mercury and Yamaha. Between those two they have about 80-percent of the market. Suzuki is probably in third place, followed perhaps by Honda. They all make very good engines.

Find a local outboard engine dealer that has a long history with one of those brands, sells many loose engines for-repowering, has an excellent service shop with factory trained and certified technicians, and has re-powered many Boston Whaler boats. Look for a dealer with easy access to the water so a re-powered boat can be tested for proper propeller selection. Talk with the owner or manager. See if you will be comfortable doing business with them. See if their location is convenient for service. See if you are feel comfortable handing the dealer a check for about $15,000.

If the dealer meets all those requirements, buy the 150-HP engine of the brand he carries.

An OUTRAGE 19 II with 150-HP should not struggle to accelerate to hull planing speeds unless the boat is extraordinarily heavily loaded or the engine is in poor tune and is not producing proper power or the propeller is inappropriate or the throttle linkage is not opening the engine to full throttle.

A 1994 Johnson 150 is a very good carburetor two-stroke-power-cycle engine with an excellent V6 design. A common problem is loss of spark in a cylinder. This will reduce the engine power output and may not even be noticed. Before abandoning the engine you might want to have an expert OMC two-stroke-carburetor engine technician check the engine to see if a simple fix might restore the engine to better performance.

Does the “WYO” in your user-id mean you are In Wyoming?

If so, at what altitude is the carburetor engine operating?

Carburetor engines may need adjustment for high altitude operation.

All engines run better at sea level due to greater air density.
