2006 Dauntless 220 Forward Hatch Gas Supports

Postby ChrisL » Tue Oct 05, 2021 9:07 am

On a 2006 220 DAUNTLESS the forward hatch gas support struts are 10 to 20-inch lift with 30-lbs force. The hatch does not have anything to keep it locked closed. These 30-lbs-force supports are back-ordered for eight weeks.

Will a 40-lbs-force support gas support strut as a replacement cause a problem?

You need to look at other vendors.

McMaster-Carr has them in stock

The force rating for a gas support strut specifies the amount of force needed to compress the strut. If a 40-lbs force strut is substituted for a 30-lbs force strut, there are two situations in which the change must be considered:

--when the hatch is in the open position: a strut rated at 40-lbs will require 10-lbs more force to close the hatch than a strut rated at 30-lbs.

--when the hatch is in the closed position: generally the use of a gas support strut with a hinged hatch is arranged so that then the hatch is in the closed position the orientation of the strut is changed so that the strut is exerting its force on two points that are fixed in position. The notion that an extra 10-lbs of force is provided by a replacement strut compared to the original strut will be unlikely to cause the two fixed points to break free of their mounting and move in response to the added force. If the closed position is such that the force from the strut is able to apply some lift to the hatch, the increase in force could result in a tendency for the hatch to reopen on its own.
