What is the intended use for the device seen in the linked URL below?

It is on a 13-foot hull.

The purpose of the device seen in the linked URL above is to function as a receiver for a oarlock, often referred to as an oarlock socket.

An oarlock is a device that holds in place an oar. Typically an oarlock will have a stem or post that fits loosely into a matching oarlock socket, allowing the oarlock to pivot in the oarlock socket as necessary when the boat is propelled with the oars.

As this inquiry was made in the REPAIRS and MODIFICATION forum, the oarlock socket seen in the linked URL appears to be in good condition and does not need repair or modification. You might consider some surface cleaning and restoration. I believe the oarlock socket was a casting, and perhaps was bronze.
