I just bought a 2006 170 MONTAUK. I want to upgrade the 2006 170 MONTAUK. Sometime in the future I plan to accomplish the following modifications so that my wife and family will be better accommodated:
  • add stern seating
  • add two-inch-thick SeaDeck
  • add loudspeakers and amplifiers for playback of stereophonic recordings
  • add a second battery
  • add a battery switch
  • add a swim platform
  • add a tow bar

Q1: will the aft seat fit? [This question is apparently in reference to the Boston Whaler aft seat for a post-2018 170 MONTAUK]

Q2: what is entailed in adding a swim platform?

Q3: is there [wood backing for the fasteners for a swim platform] to lag into?

Q4: can a tow bar be added?

Q5: what is the height of a tow bar compared to the highest part of the center console of a 2006 170 MONTAUK?

We must transit a low bridge; I want to be able to clear the low bridge [after the two bar is added].

ASIDE: [I am] new to this community but not to boating.

Leroy--the current model, the post-2018 170 Montauk (also called the 170 MONTAUK II) began production in 2018. It is vastly different that the 2003 to 2017 170 MONTAUK model.

None of the original stern seat options are being produced. With the hull changes, I highly doubt the current stern seats will fit your hull. The factory option is extremely expensive.

While the current swim platform offered on the post-2018 170 Montauk may fit, consider Ray Martin's offerings. These are tailored to the Montauk transom.

Consider the Turboswing tow accessory. It does not require significant modifications and the hoop is removable.

If you need advice about updating the primary power distribution wiring and adding a second battery, please start a new thread in the SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL forum.

You need to get the wood locating diagram for your particular Boston Whaler boat. Boston Whaler customer service may be able to help you.

The REFERENCE article on the c.2003 170 MONTAUK mentions the production epoch when embedded wood was provided in the transom. See

I avoid drilling holes in the boat unless no substitute is possible. Regarding the loudspeakers and amplifiers, consider bluetooth portable speakers, even guitar amps. "Unmolested Whalers" appear to have strong interest for future buyers as holes invite the potential for waterlogged foam cores. Many feel that the boats are so darn perfect, modifications may not have universal appeal.
