Length of Lower Drain Tube, 1969 16-footer

Postby Keyaskom » Fri Apr 29, 2022 3:29 pm

On a 1969 16-footer, I noticed the "lower" drain tube does not go completely through the transom. The drain tube only goes about 5 to 6-inches then stops. I can feel an opening with my finger from inside the boat. I used a string to push through and measure. The measurement was 20 to 22-inches.

Is a measurement [of the length of a "lower" drain tube on a c.1969 16-foot hull] correct?

Are you asking about the length of the drain from the aft cockpit sump to the outboard face of the transom?

In a 16-foot Whaler of that vintage, the length of the lower drain tube is 13 inches. You may have hidden damage on yours, indicating it should be replaced.

If you want to make the brass drain tube problem go away permanently, get a length of 3/4 ID fiberglass tubing from McMaster Carr. Using a hole saw drill out both ends to the tube OD. Fit it as needed and glass it in. Problem solved permanently.
I’ve done this to all the whalers I have owned(5).
