Thru hull transducer

Postby Gtk207 » Sun May 29, 2022 9:43 am

Hey everyone I know this topic has been discussed over and over but looking for some more direct input for my situation. Long story short my 2005 270 outrage with a airmar B744vl thru hull started leaking mostly through anti rotation bolt hole, pulled transducer expecting it to have been installed through a putty box. When I removed I was pretty disappointed at the piss poor install job and not sure where to go from here. Ultimately I wanted to to add a pair of rv 220's for my axiom to eliminate the raymarine transom mount but after seeing this I think I should either
1.-fill transducer hole eliminating the B744vl and worry about it over the winter months
2.-re-install b744vl properly(later to remove and fill)
There's definitely some waterlogged foam but I'm just going with the (only dry foam whaler are those in a showroom). I'd really appreciate any input and guidance on best course of action.

From reviewing the factory drawings there does not appear to be a factory supplied putty box for your model.

If you don't have these yet, you can download them for no charge at Whaler.com.
Select Year, family, model and doc type here:
https://www.bostonwhaler.com/resources-and-maintenance.html

It goes without saying that you should vette the vendor/person hired to ensure they are properly trained and skilled.

It is wise to remove as much water and moisture as practical while you make a proper putty box.
Do not bother with more than shop vac and running warm air for a few days. Get the surface of the foam dry enough to cure when you apply the epoxy.

It is wise to obtain the transducers prior to fabricating the putty box to ensure the puty box is the correct size and depth.

Once the repair and install is complete, drill for the twin transducers.

Hey Phil thanks for the reply I found a drawing of approximate putty box locations and I do believe I have them just not in suitable locations for the rv 220's.

That is good to know.

You are the 5th person I have talked to who has installed or wanted to install a 'ducer in the stern bilge, sump area.

The factory locations on the Outrage/Revenge/Conquest models is typically amidships. Far from ideal. Not sure what they were/are thinking.

I keep it down on the ocean. Ideally i think filling in the transducer hole and, re configuring the livewell pickup and forward fish box pump out would be ideal so I could get the two transducers in ideal locations with plenty of headroom.

Called Boston whaler today to ask a couple questions and they won't take technical support calls from customers with boats over 10 years old. I was shocked and will never buy another.
