Adhesive Used for Gunwale Cap

Postby NoProblemo » Sun Jun 12, 2022 10:48 am

On a 2005 190 NANTUCKET the gunwale cap on Port side is loose. It appears the [adhesive] failed.

Q1: can I repair a loose gunwale?

ASIDE: I found a presentation on youTube about gunwale repair, but it did not show the adhesive product used.

ASIDE: I have heard that c.2005 190 NANTUCKET boats will have live well failure. I contacted Boston Whaler; Boston Whaler who said they don't know of this problem.

Q2: what gives?

Q3: should I use the c.2005 190 NANTUCKET?

Q4: should I just let the c.2005 190 NANTUCKET be?

BACKSTORY
I just got hold of a used 2004 190 NANTUCKET or 190 OUTRAGE on a new tandem axle trailer. The boat has been cleaned up and now is running correctly, It is a fun and capable little boat.

The gunwale cap is attached with an industrial type adhesive.

To reattach the gunwale cap the old adhesive must be removed. Use heat and fishing line to break the bond.

Use of 3M5200 is not applicable; it does not bond well to aluminum. I recall at one point Boston Whaler used IPS adhesive.

This thread is moved to REPAIRS and MODIFICATIONS to discuss the repair of the problem described.

Another topic in the original thread asked about propeller selection. That discussion has been moved to PERFORMANCE.

The Nantucket is now 17 years old. If the livewell tub has not failed it is possibly one of the "improved" types or may have been previously repaired. Buying a 17 year old boat always entails some risk that a unexpected defect may be discovered after the purchase. Paying less for the boat should mitigate the pain of paying for repairs later.
