I have a 2006 Montauk with its original ‘06 (Yama) Merc 4 stroke 90 hp which has become less reliable in the past 2 years. I’m considering re-powering. Any recommendations for preferred outboard and dealer / yard recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Boat is located in Niantic CT. Thanks in advance for your help.

Be prepared to wait 3-9 months for an engine.

Loose engines are marked up 10-30%.

If you do order one, lock in the full price, in writing before putting a deposit. Without this, expect a hefty price increase when engine is delivered but not installed.

All brands of 90-115 are reliable. Question of brand is subject to the available service support in your area.

Prices are roughly:

90 hp engine - $12K
115hp - $15K
SS Prop - $500-750
Rigging - binnacle, keyswitch, 1 multi-function gauge, throttle/shift cables, network harnesses - $2000
Removal and Installation - $2000
Sales Tax - ??

Engine should be mounted 2 holes up, top bolt in the 3rd hole down from the top.

How many hours on your 2006 Yama/Merc? I’d be cleaning it up unless it is burning oil like a 2 stroke? Not familiar with that particular outboard but the. Yama/Mercs generally speaking were very good on fuel and dependable. Likely worth a fair amount if you want to sell it in the current market.
