Adding steering to STANDARD 11

Postby jester125 » Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:02 pm

Q1: how can [wheel] steering be added to my 1986 STANDARD 11?

I have found a really great deal on a JOHNSON 15-HP long shaft engine with controls that came off a SPORT 13 to replace the HONDA 10-HP short shaft engine on the boat now.

Thanks, Chris

On such a small boat remote wheel steering can use wire rope and pulleys.

An alternative is a mechanical cable steering, but beware of problems fitting the actuator to the hull and to the tiller extension—if there even is one.

Of course, the outboard engine must have some method of attaching the steering to the engine. That varies with the engine brand. I would check with the local JOHNSON engine dealer—if there is one left in your area—and get his advice.

You will have to invent some method of mounting the steering wheel.

A lot of work ahead. Maybe you should buy a SPORT 13.
