Source for Rebuild Kit for Ritchie Compass

Postby Skilletface » Fri Nov 11, 2022 6:17 pm

Q1: Where can a rebuilt kit be found to rebuild an original Ritchie Red compass from a 1961 NAUSET 16?

Q2: Can another compass be fitted to the original housing?

Ritchie no longer supports this model.

The Ritchie Model 15 Explorer compass sold as an option on many early Boston Whaler boats came in mostly red and gray, but the compass was also available in blue and green.

I think the replaceable compass capsule is the same is most all colors.

Sometimes a [compass with a] different color with a damaged housing pops up on EBAY or Craigslist, and you could install the capsule in your red compass.

FRONTEIR--thanks for lead.

I did not know about the other colors.

I’ll [repeat my internet resources] search differently.

Check with Ritchie to see if they offer an overhaul or repair service. I believe the last Ritchie compass I bought came with a lifetime warranty.

Viking in Pembroke is a factory authorized repair site. Ritchie has stopped servicing a lot of older compasses.

Did you call Ritchie?

My current boat has a small compass that failed last year, it is no longer made or supported but Ritchie had a reman in stock that they replaced my one year out of the 5 year warranty at no charge, including shipping, and I purchased a second reman for $50 that was shipped with the first one so no extra shipping.

Fun tidbit, The Ritchie rep told me they no longer make the small compasses (non gimbal mounted type) to force boat manufacturers to use larger, more accurate compasses. Don't know if that is true or not, btu I'm glad I was able to secure a replacement and spare as my boat has no physical room to use a larger compass without extensive fiberglass work.
