MONTAUK 17 RPS Placement

Postby BassettBW » Sat Dec 10, 2022 8:11 am

I just had the [cockpit deck] of my [1987--ALWAYS USE FOUR DIGITS FOR YEARS] MONTAUK 17 redone. I need to [re-install] the reversible pilot seat. I neglected to measure where its fasteners were located on the deck, and the old fastener holes are now covered. The access hole into the deck for the fuel hose is still visible.

Q1: is there enough [embedded wood reinforcement] to get [the new location of the screw fasteners] close [to their original location]?

Q2: are there any dimensions [that show the location of the screw fasteners for the RPS] available?

Q3: are there any photographs of the the reversible pilot seat location on a 1987 MONTAUK 17 boat?

You can get a drawing showing the location of embedded wood reinforcements in the hull of a 17-footer from the REFERENCE article on that boat.

Visit the REFERENCE section and read the article on the 16/17-foot hull. In the article there are links to wood locating diagrams.

Here are the appropriate URL hyperlinks:

The REFERENCE section: https://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/

The 16/17-foot Hull: https://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

The hyperlinks to the wood locating diagrams occur in the paragraph under the sub-heading "Embedded Wood."

The diagram appropriate for your 1987 MONTAUK 17 is available from the URL:

I am not aware of any resource that gives dimensions for the location of the fastener holes on the deck to secure the RPS.

Use this hyperlink to find images of the RPS location on a MONTAUK 17 boat available on CONTINOUSWAVE.COM:

Click the "VIEW ALL" hyperlink on that page.

I have a 1987 Montauk. The front of the RPS base is located 17.75 inches back from the rear of the center console. That should get you close.

You might consider being slightly forward or aft of where it was first mounted. Probably aft, for more rather than less room between the seat and console. The original area might contain a bit of dry rot.
