Q1: can [an an engine from an unspecified manufacturer made in an unspecified year that is a pull starting 25-HP engine] be converted to electric starting?

Q2: can all new remote controls be added to [a 25-HP engine from an unspecified manufacturer made in an unspecified year that has no remote controls]?

Q3: can remote steering be added [an an engine from an unspecified manufacturer made in an unspecified year that is a 25-HP engine steered by a tiller]?

BACKSTORY [The engine is apparently installed on a] 1970 Sport 13 that needs work to bring it up to date. The boat once had the mahogany console but that has been removed. I'd like to find a new mahogany console [for the boat].

I would like to add a electric start to the 25 HP engine.

The old wire cables are gone.

GIve me advice about where to start and [how to convert the engine to electric start, have remote throttle and shift, and remote steering].

Q4: who made the engine?

Q5: what year is the engine?

Q6: what model is the engine?

As for where to start, you need to realize the very large scope of your MANY projects:

  1. replace missing center console
  2. convert engine to electric start
  3. convert engine to use mechanical remote throttle and shift
  4. convert engine to remote steering
  5. acquire all the necessary rigging and accessories needed, such as steering helm, wheel, remote controls, mechanical control cables, end fittings for engine, wiring harness, ignition key switch, safety lanyard, battery cables, engine fittings for remote steering, engine fittings for remote controls, gauges;
  6. install all the new rigging necessary to the new console and the newly converted engine.

Each of those steps involves a great deal of work and details. From the way you are asking for advice, where you say you need advice on where to start these multiple projects, I get the impression you are not particularly familiar with any of these processes yourself. Giving you ALL the advice you will need is FAR BEYOND the scope of the typical question in this forum. You are going to have probably one-hundred questions about this work.

Maybe, if the necessary OEM parts are still available

Maybe, if all the necessary parts are still available.

Were I thinking about this difficult series of projects, I would go to a dealer who represents the manufacturer of this outboard engine, who was in business selling this brand back in the year that this engine was made, and who still has parts and technicians who know all about this particular model engine. I would ask that dealer for a ballpark quote to have all of this work done, and whether or not they have any interest in actually doing all this work, and whether they think they could find all the old parts needed to do all this work.

Then ask them to compare the cost for the project to the cost to buy a new engine (or a used] of the same horsepower that is already electric starting, is already configured for remote steering, and is already configured for remote throttle and shift controls.

Then to each quote, add the cost to buy the remote steering system and engine rigging for the remote controls and electric start.

Another consideration, if the engine is as old as the boat, i.e. c.1970, the engine could be an OMC engine. OMC went into bankruptcy, but was taken over by BRP. BRP maintained support for a lot of older OMC products, but a few years ago BRP decided to exit the business of manufacturing outboard engines completely, although they do continue to sell some parts. The effect of this is two-fold: there are not very many dealers around who still think they can make money supporting old OMC engines or even recent BRP engines; and, even if there were a dealer who was very interested in maintaining support for older OMC or BRP engines, the parts needed are often no longer available.

Then consider selling what you have now and just buying another used boat of similar type and vintage that has all those features you want to add to the boat you have now.

I had a c.1985 Evinrude 20-HP two-stoke-power-cycle tiller engine. I was able to source most of the parts I needed to convert from pull-start to electric-start. I also found throttle-shift connections on eBay. Getting every component I needed was a long process.

Your project is more involved than what I did. In my refit the boat still had the console, the steering helm, and the control box from when it previously had a remotely-controlled engine.
