Mechanical Wheel Steering for 1979 TENDER 11

Q1: For wheel steering is a mechanical cable of length 90-inch (measured at the sheath)—perhaps an 8-foot cable—too long to be used on 1979 TENDER 11?
I have a mechanical steering cable of 90-inch length (from some rigging from another small boat I had) and it seems to me to be just a little too long for me to use on my 1979 TENDER 11. I cannot find any shorter cables.
Q2: do mechanical steering cables need to be modified by a local shop [to make the cable length shorter]?
Q3: should I try to shorten the cable I have?
Q4: how could I shorten the cable myself?
Q5: should I order a new custom-made cable [and specify the exact length]?
MORE REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS
I have the wood refreshed.
I built a new box to attach to the wooden bench as a console, and now I am ready to install the steering wheel. I prefer wheel steering over tiller steering.
Soon the 1979 TENDER 11 will be out in the bay again after a long time of sitting in waiting.
ASIDE: Hey all, it has been a while since I've been on the forum.
