Fuel Tank Level Gauge Repair

Refer to Figure 1 below when answering the questions that follow:
Q1: On a 1986 REVENGE 22 with a 77-gallon aluminum fuel tank with mechanical gauge, what is the purpose of the springs on either side?
Q2: is the purpose of the springs on the mechanical fuel gauge on a 77-gallon fuel tank on a 1986 REVENGE 22 to push up the [dial face mechanism]?
Q3: will the mechanical fuel gauge on a 77-gallon fuel tank on a 1986 REVENGE 22 remain operational without the springs?
BACK STORY: I accidentally kicked on the gauge and broke one of the two ears off
