Re-power with a Tohatsu 250-HP engine would be something done recently, as those engines are actually made by Honda and are rebranded as Tohatsu. This arrangement was announced in 2013.

A c.2003 era 240 OUTRAGE would probably have been rigged at the factory with Mercury engines. A switch to a non-Mercury engine in the re-power would likely have required a lot of new rigging, such as engine electrical harnesses, electrical controls, and engine instrumentation.

The result of a re-power as compared to the original rigging always depends on what the original rigging was accomplished with, that is, was it single engine, twin engine, and what was horsepower of those engines? Then next comparing that to the new rigging. Outboard engines from c.2003 could have still been engines with rather high exhaust gas emission content, and those engine could have suffered in performance and reliability due to trying to conform to emission regulations. I believe Mercury was still selling carburetor rigged two-stroked engines and also OptiMax direct-injection two-stroke engines in the 200-HP and 225-HP models.

In 2026 the marketplace for modern outboard engine has improved, and the engines the leading manufacturers are now producing are likely to be very similar in the amount of power they produce and their general reliability.
