I have a 1995 Outrage 21 currently powered with twin Johnson 150's. I want to re-power and am considering a Yamaha 250 or 300. I found a very low hour Yamaha 350 that I may consider. The 350 is lighter than the combined weight of the twin but exceeds the HP rating on the tags on the boat. Has anyone powered an Outrage 210 with this size of motor? If so can you give me feedback on how it worked out?

Are you planning to use the Yamaha F350C V8 5.3-liter outboard engine that weighs 763-lbs?

The F350 V8 was also offered at a 300hp version for a few years.

Assuming the weight does not exceed the capacity the 350 sounds like an excellent fit. I would not worry about the HP limit tag.

Each of those Johnson 150s weighs about 375 lbs. The pair would still be lighter than a single F350.

If I recall the first generation 350 weighed in the lower-800-lbs range. If the two 150's combined to 750 lbs that would seem to be in the range of acceptable but on the fringe. I would love to drive that boat as it would absolutely be the most horsepower-ed Outrage I've ever heard of. You have the boat I've wanted for some time, I would love it with the 300-HP Yamaha, they come in at 565-lbs, electronic controls, very attractive setup. I don't know if there's a way to test what 800-lbs would look like sitting in the water but I would try. It might just be too much.

I have a 1995 Outrage 21. When repowering, I asked Chuck Bennett at Whaler for the maximum transom weight. He said he wouldn't go more than 700-lbs. I have some related experience which may serve as a data point.

At one point, it was clear that the 30 to 35 gallon bait tank which came in the leaning post (Fishing package #2) was not plumbed correctly for Pacific bait such as Anchovies and Sardines. I bought a Kodiak Pro-Flow 52 gallon bait tank. I put it right in front of the engine, at the stern. I put it there because of the large leaning post already affixed to the deck. I used the leaning post, where the old tank was, for life-vest storage. The 52 gallons of water was 450-lbs. My old Yamaha 200 two-stroke-power-cycle engine was about 435-lbs. Both together are not too far from the weight of a Yamaha V8 350.

When I had the bait tank full, and two people fishing at the stern, the deck was below the level of the ocean and water would flood in and become one to three-inches deep, the latter if I was heavy on fuel. (A 1995 to 1997 Outrage 21 has a 122-gallon fuel tank). I would leave the fish-holds un-corked. That was extra weight, but live fish is even fresher than dead fish on ice. This was clearly stern-heavy.

I think you'll encounter similar stern-heaviness and that kind of flooding potentially. As for performance, it will be a rocket. [My boat does] 38 to 39-nautical-miles-per-hour with my Yamaha F200XB four-cylinder engine. Minimum horsepower on this boat is 150 and maximum was 300. The boat did 50 to 55-MPH (not nautical-miles-per-hour) with twin 150 engines. Not sure how many days on the Pacific Ocean would allow for these very high speeds.

Some insurance companies will and others will not give you a problem going over the horsepower rating. Honestly, I would go with the Yamaha F300XCA as a maximum on this boat. I contemplated it myself but at the time, I was more concerned about MPG and range over speed and acceleration at full throttle from a standing start. Plus there was a $10,000 difference in price.

I am the original owner and have had my 1995 Outrage 21 just two months short of 22 years and know the boat well. [Powering a c.1995 21 OUTRAGE with a 350-HP V8 Yamaha engine] may work, but--bottom line--I think I would not exceed 300-HP and 500 to 600-lbs on the transom.
