17 Montauk with Honda 4 Stroke 90HP

Postby CarolinaRon » Mon Jul 27, 2020 7:08 pm

Greetings ContinousWave - first post.

I may buy a 1993 Montauk 17 with a fairly new Honda 90 with only 41 hours. The hull is in good shape and the price looks pretty good.

I’ve read some prior threads on the weight of various engines on a Montauk 17

To readers that have any experience with a HONDA BF90 on a Montauk 17: is there a concern with the engine weight? With the handling?

I will be pulling children skiing and tubing, and I am worried 70-HP won’t be enough.

The boat I buy will be used mostly on lakes and inshore.

Thanks to all.

What is the weight of the HONDA 90 on this particular boat?

Don't be overly concerned about weight. Take it for a test ride and see if you like it and are happy with the weight and performance.

Thanks Biggie.

Jim, I’m not 100% sure how much the motor weighs. In researching, it looks like 350-360 lbs or so. Also has a jack plate.

I had a 360-lbs Suzuki and a jackplate on my 1986 Montauk, and [performance] was great.

My neighbour has a 1995 Montauk 17 with about a 2000 Honda 90. Those HONDA engines were big and about 380-lbs. He likes the HONDA 90, but it is heavy compared to say an E-TEC. You are eliminating the oil tank.

The Honda is very good on fuel so I wouldn’t be afraid to buy the Montauk with a Honda 90 assuming it is a good boat and a good outboard.

My 1999 130 on my Outrage 18 is also a heavy outboard, I’ve had it for three years now, and I like the Honda.

Thanks Don. The boat is definitely good. The hull is in great shape. I appreciate your comments on the HONDA engine.

I run a 2000 Montauk with a Honda 100-HP engine. The Honda engine weighs considerably less than the original Mercury 75-HP FOURSTROKE. The boat handles very well, no [problems with] trim.

ADKWHALER: to know, that in a comparison of two engines, one engine weighed "considerably less" than another engine, does not give much insight into the actual weights of the two engines.

What was the weight of the Mercury 75-HP FOURSTROKE engine?

What was the weight of the Honda 100-HP engine?

If there were no problems with the boat trim with the Honda 100-HP engine, are you implying that with the original Mercury 75-HP engine there were problems with the boat trim?

The weight of modern four-stroke-power-cycle outboards has been decreasing in the last ten years with new models being introduced. There was a time when a four-stroke-power-cycle engine meant lots of weight, large engine size, and limited low-engine-speed power (or torque). Today the modern four-stroke-power-cycle engines in the mid-range horsepower have lost weight compared to prior models. But in order to have some sense of the weight, it is best to actually cite the weight. I really do not have any idea how much a c.2000 Mercury 75-HP FOURSTROKE engine weighed. But it would not surprise me to find out that in 2020 there is a Honda 90 that might weigh less.

If the topic of this thread is going to be engine weight, the actual weight of the engine ought to clearly stated.
