2003 130 Sport Yamaha F40

Postby Flot » Fri Nov 27, 2020 1:55 pm

I just picked up a used Yamaha F40B, the newer three-cylinder model, to put on my 2003 130 SPORT.

Give me a recommended propeller.

The engine motor did not come with a propeller.

Note that I have the newer, heavier, 130 SPORT, and most of these were rigged with a Mercury engine. I am unsure about the Yamaha specifications.

For your information, propellers are sold separately [from outboard engines].

I did some researching, as I often do, and found scant examples of the same boat model and engine combination.

As we know, the 130 model is 300 lbs heavier then the classic 13 Sport, yet has the same maximum horsepower rating.

In determining propeller size I use a web based prop calculator adding details such as the engine's WOT RPM (6,000) and its lower gear ratio (2:1). I add propeller slip (5%) and anticipated target speed (32-MPH) based on prior research on the forums. This returns a prop pitch value of 12-inches.

As for brand and model of propeller, not all are the same since propeller sizing is not universal.

If you are going for top speed with a light load, a good Yamaha, Stilleto or PowerTech 3 bladed propeller in stainless steel and about 12-inch- pitch would be the place to start.

If you are going for low planing speed or pulling, a 4 bladed stainless steel in 10-inch-pitch would be appropriate.

Given the large expense ($300) for propeller and the lack of identical setups by Whaler 130 owners, I would seek input of the above information from a propellre professional.
