SUZUKI DF60 Owners Sought For Comments

Postby BassettBW » Thu Apr 15, 2021 6:33 am

TO ANYONE WHO HAS REPOWERED A MONTAUK 17 WITH A SUZUKI DF60: please reply to this thread and give information about your experience.

BACK STORY: My 1987 MONTAUK [17] boat originally had a Johnson 110-HP engine that always felt too powerful to me, and it weighed 300-lbs. I use my 1987 MONTAUK [17] mostly for fishing and pleasure riding. It is not used for water skiing or tubing.

MODERN ENGINES: All modern four-stroke-power-cycle engines of 70 to 100-HP seem to weigh at least 50-lbs more [than some other unspecified engine, which perhaps was meant to be the original engine on the boat, thus they must weight about 350-lbs], except the Yamaha F70 [that has an unspecified weight apparently less than 350-lbs]. I have read recommendations on the Yamaha F70

SUZUKI DF60: A Suzuki DF60 has lower weight and cost [compared to some other engines]. The DF60 has three-cylinders.

An account of re-powering a MONTAUK with a Yamaha F50 is given in this prior article:

Storm Story: July 17, 2006, Manitoulin Island
http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/013113.html

You might find some useful information there with regard to the engine weight and its effect on the MONTAUK 17 hull.

The Yamaha F70 weighs 253-lbs dry. It is one of the lightest in its class and is the go-to favorite for owners re-powering their 15 Sport and 16-17 models.

I think the original post creates confusion about the weight of modern engines, In the original post the weights mentioned are all in reference to an unspecified other engine's weight. It is hard to follow the narrative about engine weight because the only actual weight mentioned was 300-lbs for the original engine on the boat. The weight of modern engines is trending significantly lighter in the 50 to 70-HP range than the 350-lbs imputed in the original narrative.

This discussion would be much clearer if the actual weight of the engines mentioned in the initial post were given clearly. Here are the actual weights from reliable sources:

The Yamaha F70a is listed at 253-lbs for the 20-inch-shaft model.

A Suzuki three-cylinder DF60A is listed at 229-lbs for the 20-inch-shaft model.

The weight of an older Johnson V4 1.6-liter 100-HP engine with power trim and tilt was 301-lbs.
