Outrage 25 Twin 200-HP

Postby outrage 25 » Sun Jun 27, 2021 2:03 pm

In January 2021 I bought a OUTRAGE 25 with twin c.1999 MARINER 200-HP EFI engine with 170-hours run time. I have not yet had the opportunity to test my boat at sea.

What top speed [can this OUTRAGE 25 with 400-HP] reach?

What is a good speed for cruise?

What will be the fuel consumption?

There is not sufficent information to even hazard a guess.

Please add details on the boat, engines, rigging, props, setup and weight.

A 22-year-old engine with only 170-hours is indicative of not being operated for several years. A great deal of care and attention should be dedicated to making the engine(s) ready to start.

At a minimum I would replace all fuel and fuel lines including the fuel vent and fill hoses. The fuel tank should be drained and flushed. A qualified person should carefully inspect the engine for defects before even cranking the engine. The lower unit should be removed and inspected while replacing the water pump impeller. The lower unit oil must first be drained. If the batteries are discharged they should be replaced with new. Steering should be inspected. Sacrificial anodes should be replaced.

The list goes on and on but this should give you a start in the right direction.

A classic era OUTRAGE 25 hull with notched transom and 400-HP is powered above the manufacturer's rating. The maximum horsepower rated was 300.

The top speed should be at least 50-MPH, possibly faster, if you can find conditions that allow those sorts of speeds--they are rare.

Simple two-stroke-power-cycle engines from c.1999 will consume fuel at a rate of about 0.6-lbs/HP-hour.

At full throttle that will be

400-HP × 0.6-lbs/1-HP × 1-hour = 240-lbs/hour

Gasoline weighs about 6.25-lbs per gallon so the volume of fuel consumed will be

(240-lbs/1-hour ) × (1-gallon/6.25-lbs) = 38.4-gallons/1-hour

At my fuel dock in June 2021 I noticed gasoline fuel was $4.55 per gallon.

The operating cost for fuel at full throttle will then be about $175-per-hour.

If you can hit 50-MPH at full-throttle, the fuel economy will then be 50-miles/38.4-gallons = 1.3-MPG

Generally with older two-stroke-power-cycle engines there is a very limited range for best fuel economy, usually around 70-percent of maximum power. The problem for your set up will be that still means about 280-HP total, which will mean boat speeds well above 30-MPH. That is a very fast cruising speed for many sea conditions.

The best brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) you can hope for with your legacy two-stroke-power-cycle engine with simple electrically metered fuel induction will be about 0.55-lbs/HP-hour.

Hello everybody. the engines have been started on the ground and run regularly. I'm replacing everything possible. the hull is a my 1990 year of construction 1989. I also read that the maximum power is 300 hp but the old owner replaced the engines in 1999 by mounting two of 200 hp. the boat does not have a whaler drive. the mounted propellers are made of steel, 4 blades, but I can't read any code outside. the tank is from the fuel marine union, we have removed the cover and it looks like new. I saw
around the web and on instagram some videos with boston with my own engines reaching over 60 mph top speed. the old owner claims the boat reaches 60 mph, I can hardly believe it. mercury in the engine certificate indicates a consumption of 22 gallons per hour at maximum speed for each engine I am very curious to know at this point what maximum speed I will reach and at this point at 70% what my cruise will be. sorry but a boston 25 with whaler drive is faster than a normal 25 with the same engine?

If each engine consumes 22-GPH and the boat speed is 60-MPH, then you can compute the MPG from that information yourself.

At that fuel consumption rate the BSFC is an awful 0.6885-lbs/HP-hour.

The general preference for a cruising speed is a best combination of optimum fuel efficiency, most comfortable ride in the particular sea state in which the boat is underway, and reasonably good boat speed.

Assuming a dead-flat calm, the typical 75-percent full throttle for best BSFC, and so much unnecessary horsepower on the OUTRAGE 25, optimum cruise will be about 45-MPH.

At that speed the ride will only be tolerable in flat seas.

To cruise in waves you will have to reduce speed and throttle back. The fuel economy will suffer, but the passengers will appreciate the slower boat speed.
