Outrage 18 Re-power

Postby Invictus1 » Fri Jul 09, 2021 9:20 am

I have a 1986 OUTRAGE 18, and I will re-power with an [E-TEC] 200, the 3.3-liter big-block. The engine weight is 524-lbs, a difference of 90-lbs compared to the small block 150 [an engine apparently already on the OUTRAGE 18 boat under discussion].

In the stern of the boat there is nothing else [other than the outboard engine].

The boat batteries and the oil tank are mounted under center console.

I realize [200-HP is] a lot of power and exceeds the maximum horsepower rating.

Notwithstanding liability and insurance, can a nominal 1986 OUTRAGE 18 handle [an engine of 524-lbs and 200- HP]?

For reference, the Yamaha F150 weighs 487-lb and is popular for re-power of an OUTRAGE 18 boat.

From that can I infer that an engine weight of 524-lbs will not be [controversial]?

An OUTRAGE 18—THE GAMBLER—was powered by twin 90-HP E-TEC engines. The engines were mounted on set back brackets. I am sure the total weight was more than 550-lbs.

Another OUTRAGE 18—T/T WHALE LURE—was powered by twin 115-HP engines, thus 230-HP.

The classic OUTRAGE 18 did not have a published specification for maximum transom weight.

You can make any inference you like about transom weight limit.

My personal inference: if the engine splash well drains are submerged at rest with the boat in its normal trim, the transom weight is greater than the hull design intended.

Regarding having 200-HP, I doubt there will be many times when operation of the boat will require using the extra 50-HP, but you will always be carrying that engine’s extra 90-lbs weight on the transom.

Assuming the top boat speed with 150-HP might be about42-MPH, the top speed with 200-HP should be around 47-MPH.

In general I would expect a smaller displacement 150-HP engine would produce an overall improvement in fuel economy. But unless your annual engine run time is several hundred hours, increased fuel use is probably going to be an insignificant cost in total operating expenses.

Thanks jimh. I don't care about the fuel use, don't use it enough hours to matter. Only reason I am doing this is the engine price was a great deal and I wanted to get rid of the old 1993 Evinrude 150 Ocean Pro, runs fine but tired of all the smoke and carb rebuilds. I was hoping this would have been the small block 2.6 but it trend out to be the big block 3.3, hence the weight difference for same horsepower with considerable amount of additional torque. I don't really care about top speed, doubt I would ever have good enough water to safely operate it there but do care about it jumping on plane and operating at 35mph cruise most of the time. Definitely an excessive of a motor but like I said the deal was amazing on this 2005. Just hope the transom will handle it

If the OUTRAGE 18 transom is solid, the power and weight should not cause new harm.

I have the 225-HP version legacy E-TEC. It has about 575-hours run-time in 12 seasons of use—not even 50-hours per season on average.

You have the 225 on an Outrage 18?

No, Jim's 225 Etec is on a 22 with bracket
