2019 Montauk 190 Re-power with 200-HP

Postby jbh » Sat Jul 17, 2021 11:04 pm

I plan to re-power my 2019 Montauk 190 with Mercury 200-HP FourStroke. I realize the optional engine from the base 115-HP (on the hull now) was a 150-HP. The 200-HP engine is a V6 and weighs only 20-lbs more than the 150.

What [improvement in maximum boat speed will occur with the change to 200-HP from 115-HP]?

Locate the Boston Whaler PERFORMANCE data for the 190 MONTAUK with the 150-HP engine to find the expected boat speed with 150-HP. Use that value to calculate the boat speed with 200-HP by figuring the boat speed will increase by a factor of (200/150)^0.5, or by 1.15.

From some 190 MONTAUK data from performance testing in 2018, a 190 MONTAUK with a 150-HP hits 47.2-MPH. You may expect with 200-HP the boat would reach 47.2 × 1.15 or 54-MPH.

While the weight difference between the 150-HP and the 200-HP engine may be only 20-lbs, I suspect the COST difference will be a much greater percentage increase than the weight increase. You should assess if the added cost of the 200-HP engine will be repaid by the increased maximum boat speed. Also, if you have to sell the boat in the future, the rigging with more than the maximum rated engine power could reduce the appeal of the boat to many buyers.

Another option might be to opt for the ProXS 150-HP engine, if you are seeking a faster boat speed.
