190 OUTRAGE Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE

I am re-powering a 2007 190 Outrage with a Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE with gear ratio 1.92:1. A dealer is holding an Enertia 14 x 19 propeller for me to purchase.

Give recommendations for the best prop for a 2008 190 OUTRAGE with a Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE.

Q1: should a propeller with stern lift be used?

An Enertia 14 x 19 propeller is a very good choice.

BACKSTORY: I hope to sell the Mercury OptiMax engine that is currently on the 190 OUTRAGE boat.

Predicting propeller performance with a particular boat with a new engine about to be installed will be difficult. Look for a performance report from Boston Whaler on the 190 OUTRAGE to see what propeller they found worked best with a 150-HP engine. Note the maximum boat speed obtained with 150-HP. This will give you a target for performance with the new engine and any new propeller.

Propellers that are described as having stern lift are generally propellers with very little blade rake, with large blades, and with large diameter.

Look for a performance report from Boston Whaler on the 190 OUTRAGE to see what propeller they found worked best, and assess if that propeller is a typical stern lift propeller with very little blade rake, large blades, and large diameter. This should inform you regarding the need for a stern lift propeller.

If you have been operating the 190 OUTRAGE, you are probably familiar with its characteristics in transitioning onto hydroplane. You may be in the best position to assess if a stern lift propeller is needed from your own experience.

If you are also buying the new Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE engine from the same dealer that you plan to buy a new propeller, you should insist that water-testing of the boat with the new engine and the new propeller be performed, and you should be satisfied that the propeller chosen is appropriate for the boat and engine combination.

Thanks Jim. The propeller and the engine are coming from the same dealer. The dealer said he would work with me on the propeller, but the dealer doesn't have many options at this time.

Looking at Boston Whaler performance tests for a 190 OUTRAGE with Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE, the propeller used by Boston Whaler was the ENERTIA 14 x 19. The boat speed reached 50-MPH. I would expect the 14 x 19 ENERTIA will be a very good choice based on that performance report outcome.

The only variable with regard to the propeller will be the choice of the FLO-TORQ hub kit. Work with the dealer on the selection of the hub kit. The old standard was the FLO-TORQ II hub kit. Mercury now has several newer version of their FLO-TORQ hub kits that reduce the CLUNK of the propeller shifting into gear. If the selling dealer is really well-informed about propellers, the dealer should be familiar with the hub kits options available for the Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE engine. Boston Whaler may also be a source of information on which hub kit to use.

The newer FLO-TORQ SSR (soft shift rubber) hub kit may be a good option for you.

The ENERTIA series propellers have received many good reviews. I'd love to try one on my own boat. Their price at retail is a bit steep, but the performance achieved may be worth the cost.

Follow up on the re-power.

The break-in is not complete.

With 35-gallons of fuel and no passengers, the boat speed reached 50 measured by GPS.

The engine sounded good in the 26 to 28-MPH range, and was not bogging--important to me.

I did not measure the time to [accelerate to hydroplane] but [the time] felt similar to the [the time achieved with the] old OptiMax engine.

The next test will be longevity.

To anyone considering re-powering a 190 [OUTRAGE] give the Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE a look.
