RAYMARINE NMEA-0183 Devices

Postby Jefecinco » Sun Dec 15, 2024 10:51 am

I believe I once read an article that said Raymarine used some proprietary devices or methods of connecting using NMEA-0183 devices.

Perhaps you are confusing the Raymarine SeaTalk NG (for "Next Generation" of SeaTalk) variety of NMEA-2000. The Raymarine SeaTalk NG communication uses essentially the same protocol as NMEA-2000 but implemented the wiring using different electrical connectors.

Raymarine wrote:SeaTalk NG is Raymarine's cabling system used to carry NMEA 2000 data. SeaTalk NG cabling offers several benefits when networking Raymarine instruments and autopilots.
They also mention:
Raymarine wrote:SeaTalkng is a proprietary extension to NMEA 2000 and the proven CAN bus technology. Compatible NMEA 2000 and SeaTalk / SeaTalk2 devices can also be connected using the appropriate interfaces or adaptor cables as required.

See: https://www.raymarine.com/en-us/our-products/networking-and-accessories/seatalk-ng-and-nmea-2000

Raymarine also makes some protocol converters that attempt to translate certain SeaTalk NG (i.e., NMEA-2000) datagrams into corresponding NMEA-0183 sentences.

See:

https://www.raymarine.com/en-us/our-products/networking-and-accessories/seatalk-ng-and-nmea-2000/seatalk-ng-to-vhf-nmea-0183-converter-kit

and the installation manual (linked below) at Page 10.

This particular product was a one-way translator. The product was able to convert some SeaTalk NG (NMEA-2000) parameter group data into a limited set of NMEA-0183 sentences.

For more details about this converter, consult its installation manual, "NMEA 0183 to SeaTalkNG Converter Installation instructions 87256-1-EN.pdf", available at

https://raymarine.app.box.com/s/rvhycb6 ... 3240336057

Note this converter device appears to ONLY permit the SeaTalk NG device (which could be a GNSS receiver or a multi-function display with an integral GNSS receiver) to send POSITION DATA to the NMEA-013 device (which is presumed to be a DSC radio).
