I have a [Standard Horizon] GX2200 [VHF Marine Band DSC Class D radio] with its own internal GNSS receiver.

I plan to [interface the GX2200] to my GARMIN chart plotter. A GARMIN representative said I could just hook up the wiring for AIS and forget about hooking up the wiring [to get boat position data from the GARMIN GNSS receiver] since my radio already [has its own GNSS receiver].

I can just [interface the radio to the chart plotter so the chart plotter will show] AIS [targets]?

Or, should I [interface the chart plotter to send my boat position to the radio using its GNSS receiver] as well? If so

If I did, what benefits would occur?

I believe that a Standard-Horizon GX2200 radio has only NMEA-0183 interfaces for exchange of data with other devices.

To interface a GX2200 radio with AIS to a chart plotter, you will use the NMEA-0183 TALKER signal line from the radio and connect to a chart plotter's NMEA-0183 LISTENER signal lines

To interface a GX2200 radio to an external GNSS receiver, you will use the NMEA-0183 input lines to connect to the TALKER signal lines from the external device.

Since the GX2200 radio under discussion has its own internal GNSS receiver, interfacing to an external receiver can be useful to provide a back up source of boat position.

Note that GARMIN uses very inconsistent wire colors and non-standard interfaces.

Standard Horizon makes well regarded marine band VHF radios. However, if one plans to interface such a radio with other marine electronic devices it may be useful to consider devices designed to be interfaced with a NMEA 2000 network for ease of installation and simplicity of the interface wiring. Simrad is a manufacturer marketing NMEA 2000 compatible devices.
