Apple iPad Pro 9.7

Postby jimh » Tue Mar 22, 2016 11:46 am

Yesterday the Apple computer company announced a new model of 9.7-inch iPad, the iPad Pro 9.7, and emphasized the display luminance as achieving a new high. According to Apple's presentation, the new model iPad Pro 9.7 has a screen luminance of 500-nits and a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels. (The luminance specification does not appear on their website but did appear on a slide presented during the product introduction yesterday.)

The screen resolution is much better than any recreational grade chart plotter of similar display width. For example, the typical smaller chart plotter, say a Humminbird HELIX 7 or a Lowrance HDS-9 Gen-3, will have a screen resolution of only 800 x 480. The Apple iPad Pro 9.7 has more than eight-times the total number of pixels.

The display luminance of recreational marine chart plotters is generally better than the Apple iPad Pro 9.7. For example, the Humminbird Helix 7 display is specified as having 1,500-nits and the Lowrance HDS-9 Gen-3 as having 1,400-nits. These displays are about three times brighter than the newest and brightest Apple iPad Pro 9.7.
