Jim H., in the reference section you say that the `16-`17 Hull changed to the redesigned smirk hull in 77`, I could have sworn I saw a 76` `17 Smirk hull somewhere? Can I be seeing things? Which is correct? Thanks Jim H. or anyone who can answer this question. Regards-Jack Graner.

Jack, The smirk hull came out in '76 it was a mid-year change. My Montauk has a '76 hull with '77 interior. When I bought my boat you could get a great deal on a old hull as Whaler was trying to sell off all the old hulls.

Alioop, thanks for the info, I wish I was around then too purchace an old hull Montauk for the great deals you`re talking about! I just love the old hull design, it is very stable and I like that for fishing. Regards-Jack Graner.

I'm not familier with the old hull. The first Montauk I ran was in the mid 80s. I sure don't find anything wrong with the stability or performance of my 1999 Montauk, only the price.

The first Whaler catalog to mention the new "Smirk" 17' hull was the 1977. So the mid-year introduction makes sense. BW often did this. I know that the '78 Outrage 20 and the '83 18 Outrage were also mid-year introductions of the prior year. If only they'd known how confusing all of this would be to "Classic Hull Historians" trying to sort this out 25 years later!

Dick, the old hulls are a little more stable than the newer "SMIRK" hulls, but the newer ones ride a little better in a chop, and are drier. I love them both, but lean a little more towards the older design. Have a great time with you`re new Montauk. P.S. I acctually don`t have a Montauk, but a Currituck, the bench seat model. I hope someday soon to get a Montauk, Eastport, Nausett, etc. I love center consoles also. Larry, you`re right about the confusion, it`s like Boston Whaler sales should have waited a little longer to put out the newer hull, but to their defence, they wanted to sell the great "Smirk" design as the smoother, drier, neater looking version of the `17 Footer. Regards-Jack Graner.
