I'm looking at buying a spare motor for my newly acquired Boston Whaler Montauk. The motor I found is a '89 Yamaha 90HP motor that was only run in Freshwater. It appears to run very well and has no corrosion. The compression is also good with very little variation between cylinders.
I was wondering if you guys had any opinions as to the value of this motor. I believe I can get it for $1300 with Controls and Prop.

Your expert opinions are very well appreciated.

Thank you,

Why do you need a spare motor?

I don't need one but came across this one and thought, "what the heck" . If it's a very good deal why not get it and put it in the garage.
I know firsthand how much new motors and their associated parts cost. The guy I bought the boat from had his lower unit fixed ~1 year ago and paid $2800 from the marina !!
I'm a sucker for a good deal...that's if it's one at all.

It is a good deal. You will need to fog it and drain the carbs if it is gonna sit. Then you will need to service it when you decide to use it. Bad idea in my book unless your engine is sketchy. If it sits for 5 years, it is gonna need some work to get it running again and then is 5 years older and wiorth less, etc. $2800 for a foot, he was a SUCKER!

Its my observation that used mid range horsepower outboards over 10 years old do not fetch more than about $2500 retail and as a trade in its likely to fetch about $750 at most.

If your current 90 is in good condition, that spare might sit in your garage gathering dust for years. On the other hand, you might buy the spare, try it next season, and keep the best of the two and sell off the lesser.

If it were me, I'd just ride out the 90 you have until it dies and use the $1300 plus interest towards a new repower.

The other option would be to find a Montauk with a bad motor. I know of one in the Columbus, Ohio area it is a 1980 model in good condition. Let me know if you want more details.Regards, Jay

Do to the amount of interest(emails) in the 1980 Montauk, I have called the owner to see if it is still available. I looked at the boat in July. The motor was still running but I placed no value on it because it was a 1980 Merc 80HP. The boat needed all teak restored. Some gel coat work, nothing through the webbing. A good cleaning and buff job. Also it was on a roller trailer. I offered $3500.00 Guy was $4500.00 firm. I'll post when I hear back from him. Regards, Jay

If you decide to pass on this motor would you mind passing the information on to me. I'm looking to repower a '66 Eastport and it sounds like just what I've been looking for.

I will decide this weekend. After that, if I decide not to get it I will give you the gentleman's phone number.
