My flying top for the 1983 22 Revenge arrived today. The stainless is heavy and the zippers and canvas look great. Can't wait to get it on the boat. But I have a question: does the long support frame go at the back or at the front? It's kind of hard to tell from some of the Cetacea photos. Also, my boat has a low, curved, two-piece windshield that looks different from any I've seen in the photos. Could someone send me a photo of a Revenge of this vintage--a side view--with the flying top up?

By your windshield description, it sounds like you have a REVENGE CUDDY model. Does it look like the one in the 2nd picture shown on Page 14 of Cetacea? If so, first be sure you ordered the correct top.

Yes, mine is virtually identical to the photo, just three feet shorter--same windshield configuration. But aren't all Revenges cutty-cabin models? Most of the photos I see have a squared-off cabin with a higher, four-piece windshield. Guess I'll just have to wait until I can get it on the boat.

"Cuddy-cabin," that is.

The Revenge and Revenge Cuddy have different cabin shell molds and windshields, as you have discovered.

The Revenge Cuddy is basically the same shell as the center console Outrage Cuddy, but with a side extender piece and low windshield added on. The design idea behind the Revenge Cuddy that you have, was a larger floor area.

The "regular" Revenge of 1983 would take a completely difference canvas system from yours. Be sure you have bought the right thing from Mills. Somewhere in Cetacea there are some photos of the standard Revenge of this period. I think the boat is not in great shape, but will show the completely different configuration.

I think lhg may be thinking of the picture of the 1980 V-22 Revenge (c1980-85) on page 46, reference 46-6 is a good shot of the windshield.

This study of cetecea is not simple is it? There are so many different variants.

O.K. I'm really confused now. If my model is a Revenge Cuddy, doesn't the regular Revenge also have a cuddy cabin? What's the difference other than the shape of the windshield. I can send a photo if anyone would care to see what mine looks like. Lord, I hate to think about shipping that top back to Mills.

Now I think we're into symantics. The regular Revenge simply has a cabin, and I think it is larger (longer?) the than the Outrage/Revenge Cuddy shell. The top shell mold of the Revenge is COMPLETELY different, and more elaborate, and considerably larger & heavier.

Very often any boat with a small cabin is called a cuddy cabin, but in Whaler's particular case, there is a difference. A lot of people do refer to any Revenge as a "Cuddy" model, but as you have found out, this can be confusing and deceptive.

I have never seen Mill's canvas systems on a Revenge Cuddy model. Does someone here know if they actually made it? Don McIntyre?

Oops, I see that lhg doesn't have an email address listed. Would you contact me off-board so I can send the picture?

In the context of Whaler's naming convetions, it seems REVENGE means:
--fixed windshield
--dual console helm setup

Thus we have the REVENGE, REVENGE-WalkThrough, REVENGE-WalkAround, REVENGE-Cuddy.

The boat most people associate with the "Revenge" badge is the REVENGE-WalkThrough.

Cetacea p. 14, #2 identifies the boat as an Outrage Cuddy. But shouldn't it be Revenge Cuddy? There's no center console on this boat that I can see.

The boat you refer to is indeed incorrectly labelled an Outrage Cuddy. It is actually a Revenge Cuddy. This same boat can be seen on page 17 of Cetacea in photos #1 and #2.

The error has already pointed been out here:

That's my boat, all right--just three feet longer. The decal on mine says Revenge 22.

I have a 1983 22' Revenge Cuddy. If you would like a picture of it, post your email address
