This item may be old news but I thought I'd put it up. Yesterday out fishing and was passing between the Banana River and the ICW in the Barge Canal that runs behind the SeaRay, Merritt Island plant. Sitting in a slip was a new BW Defiance, in amongst several SeaRay Sundancers- they get sea trialed from here into the ICW (Indian River). One of the two other guys fishing with me was a SeaRay employee. I asked what the BW Defiance was doing there? He said, we make them in the plant (SeaRay). And, then sea trial them before shipping. BW Defiance is not made in Edgewater. Boat looked big solid but I bet it's a rough ride off shore with that flattish hull. FYI David

I don't know about now, but when I toured the Edgewater plant in February 2000 I saw a couple of Defiances under construction. As a matter of fact they allowed me to board one and inspect the work.

I was told that for the last year they were being made by SeaRay on Merritt Island. Maybe someone has more info-just relaying what I was told by an employee of SeaRay.

The boat looks like a Sea Ray anyway, except for the non-euro transom, so they might as well be making it! They probably designed it besides. I would think they are better equipped for making such a boat in the first place.

The Defiance from the best of my knowledge started out in Edgewater. At least last year when I spoke with Chuck Bennett at Whaler and he was kidding with me to move up from our 27's -- ;)

Now it just may have been shifted to SeaRay since they seem to have excess capacity and as LHG points out better equipped to make a large inboard than Edgewater. Since it doesn't quit fit their standard construction processes. TZ

Guys- Sorry for the false alarm. I just got off the phone with the customer relations folks at the BW, Edgewater plant. "About a year ago we did have our molds for Defiance at the SeaRay plant. We have shifted them back to Edgewater." Defiance is not made at the SeaRay plant at this time. What the boat I saw was doing there is anyone's guess.

Also, BW no longer has the molds for the main flooring (gas tank cover) part 22341200. I was looking for one as an option to rebuilding mine in 6 months-- the main reason for my call to BW. Customer Relations was most helpful in providing the name of one their former laminations guys who should be able to rebuild the floor part when it needs to be done.

Happy Whalering David
