I just never thought to ask it, until now:

Why is a cabin called a 'cuddy?' What does this word mean?

I just looked it up in the dictionary and it is defined as a small room or cabin (space) in bow or stern of a boat. Also means a donky or a stupid person... hummmm Clark... SCN

A cuddy is a small shelter cabin. I canít find a reason for the name in any nautical reference. Webster says the origin is unknown.

Welll, CUDDLE means to hold close and fondle; to lie close; to snuggle.

That's about all the room you have in a cuddy.

Could it be a variation of Cubby hole?

\Cud"dy\ (k?d"d?), n. [Prob. a contraction fr. D. kajuit cabin: cf. F. cahute hut.] (Naut.) A small cabin: also, the galley or kitchen of a vessel.

I guess. Sounds kind of cow like -- 'cuddly cabin?' Maybe a little better.

Thanks, David. Good site.
