It is with great sadness that I’m informing the whaler community that my dear friend and whaler partner, Tony Wilde (elaelap) has passed away after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Edie and their two adult children, Katie and Nick. 10 weeks ago, we were out salmon fishing. We caught 2 nice kings and then I chided him for wanting to quit early. A week later he went to the doctor and was informed he had 2 to 12 months to live. Even with the fatal prognosis, we were able to go out 3 more times doing what Tony loved most, salmon fishing from our partner boat Strike3. Tony, and I am grateful for Jimh’s ContinuosWave and this whalering community for providing us with the knowledge and camaraderie to enjoy our whalers. Tony has amassed over 4000 hours on his Katama 17 Loolee 3, Outrage 18 Cetaceous, Montauk Amulet and our partner boat Strike3 a, b and c, co-owned my myself and Warren Tom. That’s 100 forty-hour work weeks doing what you love. He’s boated with fellow CWers Erik Sellis in Holland, JimP in Alaska , Perry and Bert in Hawaii along with dozens of West Coast CWers. He’s received expert advice from many in our little community. Tony even enjoyed sparring with those of differing views. His 4000 boating hours may be even surpassed by his 8000+ posts. Yikes. He’s also posted hundreds of great photos from his boating adventures. Tony will be greatly missed. Matt |

So sorry to hear this news. I never had the opportunity to meet Tony, but we spoke several times a few years ago when I was planning a trip to Sonoma to attend a wedding. He offered a ride on Strike 3 if I could find the time, but our schedules didn't allow us to meet up in person. I could tell what a good guy he was in the few times we spoke. He and his family will be in our thoughts & prayers. |

I for one will sadly miss Tony. The short time I have been a member, I have enjoyed his determination and strong views on life. I loved seeing his travel photos and other incidental photos he thought important to post. I will miss the colourfull way he could effectively communicate his point of view and kept some of the members continually on their toes.

I was out Sunday and saw a solo fisherman off the trees in the strike three outrage. I tried calling in on vhf but the person did not answer. I thought it was Tony and mentioned it to my partner at the time how well regarded he is on this board. I don't know and don't think that was him, but it is eerie to hear this news. I don't know who was running the boat Sunday, but this really strikes home how temporal all of this is. I am sorry to hear of his passing, my condolences to all of his family and friends. |

Tony's life touched many of ours through his writing here, in his contagious enthusiasm for fishing and boating, by his zest for living, and through his strong conviction in his beliefs. We feel sadness now, but it will soon be replaced with a joy in having had the opportunity to know Tony, to go boating with him, to share a beer, and to call him a friend. |

If we've learned anything it would be that an F115 is more than adequate for an 18' Outrage in our lumpy waters off of the CA coast, and that salon weights can act as a "ballast" to offset a porky motor. :) |

Matt, thanks for sharing news with our community. Tony will be well missed. I hardly knew him but am very saddened by this news. His enthusiasm for life and Whalers were infectious. The picture of Tony on his 15 in the mist is a great shot - perhaps should be in a Whaler calendar. My favorite Tony pics are of his 18 high and dry on the mud flats of SPB - I gave him a hard time about that in jest. Sadly, our schedules never aligned to have him out sturgeon fishing... Definitely Pale Ales on the boat next run out... |

Tony didn't want any funeral or memorial or such but maybe I'll try to revive the fall rendezvous thread and we can celebrate him in Bodega Bay again. Warren, it is amazing that internet strangers can form such a bond. Our Strike3 partnership was born 8 seasons ago. When I first met Tony's family, his daughter looked at me, then Tony and exclaimed, "Dad, you told me to never meet men on the internet!" One of the few times Tony was caught speechless. Matt |

Farewell good friend with wisdom, great humor and fine company at sea It is with great honor and humility thatbi will step on board Loolee 3 for my next adventure I met Tony only days after I made the very impulse buy of loolee 3 from a dealer we both knew in common I rrmember clearly some of thenpersonal touches Tony gave the boat he had a nautical chart of bodega bay waters laminated and attached to the console. That was Tony's passion...and much of mine to this day He introduced me to this website and many great friends I will have for life he is very well known by every party boat captain in Bodega Bay's fishing village he was everyones friend without exception I am proud to have been his friend and fishing pall. Many times he would drive the boat while matt and I dove. He was a fully licensed six pac captain and helped George on the "SANDY ANN" often It doesnt surprise me how much love there is here for Tony He left a larger than life impression on all who met him So long Tony |

Jimh- well said! About five years ago my wife and I traveled to San Francisco to dive with great white sharks at the Farallon Islands. The first day the trip weathered out due to high seas. I had talked with Tony several times on the phone after "meeting" him here at CW. We were set to go on a tour of Bodega with Tony when we had to cancel so that we could make another run out to the Farallons. High seas stopped us half way, and we returned to SF Bay, missing our visit with the landlord, and too late to rendezvous with Tony at Bodega Bay. After selling my Menemsha, I haven't posted much at CW. Whaler folks don't care much about the adventures of a MAKO boat! I still check in at least every week to see what's going on at CW. I had wondered why we had not seen any posts from him, I figured he was on another adventure, Hawaii, Europe, New Zealand,etc... When I saw this thread I was looking forward to "catching up with an old (internet)friend" not eulogizing him. Turns out Tony is on another adventure. Too bad he won't be posting pics and commentary on CW. This place won't be the same without him. We'll miss you Tony!-k |

And now will be the time to be nice. To say what need to be expressed As there will be no comeback or second chance to do it again. A time to reflect in the privacy of our thoughts Of a man that was truly himself in opinions as a singular and specially unique mentality Courage is what comes to mind when thinking of Tony. Reminding me at times as one of the cast from the Lincoln latest Hollywood script. He would never hesitate to give sneering rebuttal to the opposition In ways that had parties in fits of stammering dysfunction. We all must see now of the fun and wisdom instituted through his debates That gave no quarter or rebates. I will miss his quick retorts and willingness to give opinions On subjects that often defied rationalization And we should all be so lucky to have been revered or "disputed" In such a many ways as our Friend Paleale did In his expressions of his well lived recollections of his own and arresting experiences. His subdued tone lately gave me hint of dire subjects. Fair Winds..

I think it was Tony who sold me the shepherd's crook off his boat after he removed his (for basically shipping). I was going to meet up with him around 2006 when I was in San Francisco but our schedules didn't match up. Tony had given me (and I am sure others) a standing offer to go fishing with him on his boat and regrettably I never took him up on it. I will forever regret that. Philosophically, I agreed with Tony on a lot of topics, but not all, but it would be difficult to find someone with more conviction personally and professionally. For those of you who got to know him better, I am sure you are better for it. |

When thinking about ContinuousWave, I think of a few members. Jimh, LHG, Jeff, Tony, and perhaps a few others. He was such a large part of this community. RIP PaleAle I am so sad to see such a great member and boating cyber-friend pass. I pray for solace and comfort for his family. |

I've been a member here for over 7 years [mostly under a retired previous screen name] and have many fond memories of Tony bantering back-and-forth, exchanging knowledge and witticisms and sometimes flat-out arguing with all of us at one time or another. While often disagreeing with some of his views, I have always respected him for his wealth of knowledge and proven seamanship. I have enjoyed reading many a story he related of his experiences both current and reminiscent of "days-of-yore." It is quite saddening to come here today and learn of his passing - His postings and musings on this forum will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends that knew and loved him so well. A prayer for peace of heart, mind and soul to be comforted in the cherished memories that he leaves you (and us here) all with. Warmest Regards with Deepest Respect and Sympathy, |

Sad news to hear of the passing of such a prominent and respected member of this small online community! As a fellow angler, I learned a bit of Pacific coast fishing from his posts; stuff foreign to this New Jersey fisherman. RIP, Tony, RIP... ~Tom |

I haven't posted often because I'm still dreaming about my first Whaler. I lived my dream through many of Tony's Whaler's and pics. No one really knows how many lives they touch. You and he have touched mine for years now. Rest in peace Tony. Tight lines for eternity. |

I've been gone for a while due to family problems but when I finally checked in after about 9 months I find this. Sad, very sad! Many here contribute greatly to the success of this forum, Tony contributed more than most. As everyone knows he will be missed. |

I’m very sad to hear of Tony’s passing !! Tony and I often had a difference of opinions on numerous subjects but I always respected his views and will miss him terribly. I always enjoyed his post and his knowledge of Boston Whaler’s. His pictures of his fish and his trips were always great and the stories of the trips were great. Whenever I would be surfing CW and would run across a post by Tony, I would always stop and read what he had to say because it seemed to always be interesting. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but sparred with him often. I always said Tony would argue with a stump and I guess that was one of the things I liked about him. Just reading the many post about Tony and one can easily see how much he was liked and how much he will be missed. I would bet that if there is a Whaler heaven then Tony is right there showing off his boat. Rest well Tony (elaelap) you left us too soon and you will be missed. |

I just saw this - it's very sad news. I enjoyed his posts and pictures and we had tried to fish together a few time -either him coming to the rivers or me going to the sea. I wished that I could have met him. We came from different worlds but but loved some of the same things - Whalers, fishing and living life to the fullest. He will be missed. Robert |

Back from vacation and trips and find this thread. I enjoyed his posts, and always thought whenever I got back out to the west coast, Tony would be a guy I'd like to meet.... A few years ago, a good flying buddy that I see only twice a year removed a tape measure from his pocket and told me to hold the "smart" end while he pulled out what he called the "dumb" end, and pull it out to about 85 inches. Did that. Then he asked me to place my finger on my age (60+). Walt said that 85 represented the normal life expectancy of a white male, then he got down real low, and while squinting up that little yellow metal line, bore sighted me and asked what was I gonna do with the rest of it. When I hear of news like Tony, I think about Walt's story. Don |

Just as this sad news was posted we went away on a salmon fishing trip up north of Vancouver Island. I understand Tony was quite the salmon fisherman. I couldn't help but think of him a few times when landing a big king. Also he provided great photos one recent one which I remember a great BBQ recipe. Strong voice and opinions and helpful advice made Tony a fabulous contributor to the Continuous Wave website. Without meeting Tony one could still read through the lines that he was a great guy. |

The last time I was scouring the West Coast looking for a good used Whaler, Tony was my enthusiastic cheerleader, encouraging me all the way. He went out of his way to inspect boats that were in his area and would immediately call me up and tell me all about what he saw. He was an experienced boater with a critical eye. One boat he went and looked at was not as clean as it appeared in the ad. It was neglected and Tony was critical of the owner and how he cared for the boat. We were both disappointed with the boat. Still, he encouraged me to consider buying it. Tony, always trying to find the good side of things, reasoned that I might be able to strike a great deal on it and then fix it up. He offered his advice on how to leverage the poor care the boat had received to a lower purchase price. He provided me with a long list of nits to use in negotiations. But at the end of the conversation, Tony gently told me that if I talked with the owner, I was not to mention his name; he didn't want the owner pissed off at him because he was hoping the guy would accept his invitation to go fishing with him the following week! That was Tony: he loved everybody and always relished the opportunity to make new friends and he always based his friendships on common interests, never politics, appearances or socioeconomic status. We need more people like Tony Wilde. |

Tom, That reminds me of another time Tony drove 2 hours to Stockton, CA to inspect a 25' Revenge for another CWer who lived in I believe Canada. In fact I think he consulted with you in giving the prospective buyer an even better assessment. The only thing Tony liked more than Whalers, was shopping for them with other people's money. We looked at quite a few. Matt |

Tom sez: quote: Tony's skill and reputation of sizing up a used Whaler carried HUGE sway with me, when he found and inspected my Alert 17 (law enforcement Montauk). When he told me he liked it so much, he nearly bought it out from under me, and then asked me for first right of refusal if I ever wanted to sell it, I knew I had found my boat. And then he spent an hour on the phone with me while on his vacation in Hawaii, talking about it. Class act, putting others first, and he never let our divergent political beliefs color our interaction one little bit when it came to Whalers. -Peter |

Damn. hadn't checked here for a couple of months and now I know why Tony's cell phone kept going to voice mail, and why he hadn't returned my calls. In fact, I just thought about it yesterday, after getting my Montauk back from the shop, because it wasn't like him not to return a call enthusiastically. We only went out together once, in my Whaler, and while he was showing me the spots and the ropes for Lingcod fishing, I was providing the chum (ugh). So, though we only live(d) ten miles apart, most of our interactions were at the rendezvous, both in Bodega and the S.F. Bay. I trolled for Salmon next to him, but never with him, something I regret. Unlike some of the members on this forum, Tony and I shared most political and social views. I will miss him and his larger than life personality. Thanks, Tom, for the info, looking forward to hoisting a beer with you and the others in a month. Bob Bulwa |

I had not had any email from him in months, and occasionally paused and thought it odd, but I had my own stuff going on (really hard year). I was gone most of September and only found out about this a week or two ago. Tony and I fell into the same lines in many topics (except my dislike for things made in China, for which he shredded me gently). When I was looking for my 18 Outrage, he tried to get me to consider one in a shop up his way, but the logistics were tough. He visited the boat, sent many photos and details. We were invited to visit his home several times. So so sad about this. He had character, generosity, a wealth of knowledge across a broad spectrum of topics and a kind heart. For the rest of us, this is the reminder life is short and it changes on a dime. Our similarities are greater than our differences. Do what you have longed to do. RIP Tony. |
