I want to upgrade to a higher HP engine for my older ('65) 13' Whaler.

Preferably a remote control / electric start.

If you happen to have one for sale, let me know.

I have a Johnson 28hp SPL that I bought used and didn't instal on a 13. It still is a 20" shaft but I was told it could be cut down to fit the shorter transom. I am asking $800 for it. It looks like it is new. Location Harwich Cape Cod. Dave

I have a 15" Mercury 35 that is on a 1972 13 sport, I think the engine is a mid 80's motor.

I have future plans to restore the boat, but I know that I will not get to it for a few years. Right now its stored in my garage in RI. It was maintained by by Outermost marine in Catuamet, MA for many years. i lnow the water pump is newer (1 or 2 years old). it has newer style Mercury controls and cables.

If you interetsed let me know.

Hi Dan. How have you been? Do you still have your place on Cedar Island?

I'll drop you an email and we can chat about the motor.

How much do you need for the motor, Pull start only??

I am bringing in another 13 into the barn which is early 1960's in overall good shape.

I have a early 80s vintage 50HP Rude on a 13, plan to take off the boat and sell soon. Hasn't been cranked in awhile, will probably run it this weekened if it will start. Not sure on the price, under $500 unless carbs need rebuild...will probably need a waterpump....Oh yeah, I'm in Aiken, South Carolina 29803 a LONG ride from Connecticut....

It is possible but I doubt that 50hp is a short shaft.

Yes OMC made 50's in short shaft in the early 80's. They even made a 75hp in a 15" shaft.

No kidding Toshib, but they are rare and will bring more $$$. Hence why I say possible but not at all probable. Probably 100 times more likely Mav's 50hp is a 20".

Merc made a 15" 1500xs find me one of those for $500 and I'll spot you another $500 for a finders fee, same goes for an OMC 15" stinger 75hp in good condition.

The 50's are not that rare and the 40 is the same engine. I see them all the time but who wants to own a 25+ year old engine these days? Now a tiller 15" would be rare.

"The 50's are not that rare and the 40 is the same engine"...

Please explain. How is the 40 and 50 the same?

Mav.. He means the powerhead is the same block. I am one that would love to own a 25 plus year old outboard. A mercury 1500xs would look nice in the collection as well as an sst OMC, waterwitch, well you get the picture. And yes I use a 30 plus year cross flow V-4 OMC outboard almost daily.

John, sorry your thread went on a derail. I have an 1986 15" short shaft 30hp OMC remote with electric start. I can give it a look over if you are still looking and won't mind owning an almost 25 year old outboard.

Sure a 1500XS or even a 850Xs would be sweet but you are talking rare race engines. I saw a 3cyl sprint recently but not cheap.

Mav the 40, 48, 50, 55, and 60 2cyl are basically all the same engine but not all came in 15" shafts. None of which I believe are PTnT. Nothing wrong with 25 year old engines(currently own a 1987 20hp) but the market demand is not that high. I have noticed in the last 2 years that older engines have dropped considerably in price. It used to be a 9.9 would ALWAYS fetch at least $500-600 in nice shape, seeing them for sale for $275 and up lately.

Save your money and just use a 20" motor with a jackplate. Trying to find a good 40hp 15" motor is like searching for your keys in the snow at night, except that when you do find them, you turn around and all the cash in your wallet is gone too.

They're rare. And you have to use a stand-off bracket for the steering to boot.

That said, I've got a 1988 Evinrude 40hp with a 15" shaft sitting in my garage that is in need of a rebuild. If and when I ever get around to it, it'll make a great motor for somebody with deep pockets.

I have a 94 40hp Evinrude short shaft electric start w/remote control. Also have teleflex steering cable, steering wheel and bracket to mount on classic 13. I bought the boat (67 whaler) this year and the previous owner ran the motor on muffs for me - under the cowl is very clean - cowl has some scratches and the lower unit could use some paint. Previous owner told me the motor runs excellent.

The only problem I see is the manual tilt does not work (I'm guessing it's an easy fix) and the VRO has been disconnected.

I'm selling it because I'm converting to tiller drive, once I restore the boat.

I'm located in south Jersey

Will sell all for $850.00
