I had to remove the engine from my 70 Sport to repair some dings in the hull. Found beneath the Johnson 40 (1988) what looks like plywood siliconed to the transom on the outboard side.

Is this a homemade wedge? Are wedges generally needed on 13's? What is the optimum way to remount the engine?

From your description is sounds like a home-made (or dealer added) addition.

Which way does the wedge run? I'd gues it might be thicker at the top, to allow the engine to trim in a bit more.

Same old problem with Whalers and OMC engines. OMC's power trim system had inadequate range during those years.

The plywood outline looks like the commercially available (West Marine) aluminum wedges and they run top to bottom. Thickness is a lttle hard to reconstruct because the lower third (guess) was so heavily rotted and fragile. It seems that the wood is 3/16 or 1/4 at the top and the thickness of one plywood layer at the bottom. I would have thought since the transom slants forward as you go down the transom that the thicker part of the wedge should habve been at the bottom so that the engine bracket was more nearly vertical.

No - just the opposite. The thick part of the wedge is at the top. The reason for this is that the OMC engines did not have enough "tuck in" range in the trim system. Usually wedges are used to allow the engine to plane faster and to keep the boat from porpoising while under way. The plywood was some homemade solution! You may have to get a set of the aluminum wedges if the porpoising problem exists.

An interesting sidebar, some of the new Impacts that I looked at at shows have had wedges on them

wow, 8 years later as i change motors on my bw impact and try to figure this wedge thing out, i find this post! thanks! dgh

I used a pair of aluminum wedges from the local Yamaha dealer. I believe they are a sea to sea part.
Ran about $30.00 for the pair, they work well & fit good.
